An update on JavaOne

Like many of you, every year we look forward to the workshops, conferences and events related to open source software. In our view, these are among the best ways we can engage the community, by sharing our experiences and learning from yours. So we’re sad to announce that we won't be able to present at JavaOne this year. We wish that we could, but Oracle’s recent lawsuit against Google and open source has made it impossible for us to freely share our thoughts about the future of Java and open source generally. This is a painful realization for us, as we've participated in every JavaOne since 2004, and I personally have spoken at all but the first in 1996.

We understand that this may disappoint and inconvenience many of you, but we look forward to presenting at other venues soon. We’re proud to participate in the open source Java community, and look forward to finding additional ways to engage and contribute.

Google: 1,000,000 Gmail calls in 24-hours

Google hath tweeted that their new integrated Gmail calling feature announced yesterday has already seen 1,000,000 phone calls placed in just under 24-hours. The new service allows users to place VoIP calls — right from within the browser — to the U.S. and Canada free of charge and for very affordable rates to other countries around the world. We’ve been playing with the new feature and we have to say, it’s pretty impressive. Have you tried it? Thoughts?

Today we’ve launched a change to our ranking algorithm that will make it much easier for users to find a large number of results from a single site. For queries that indicate a strong user interest in a particular domain, like [exhibitions at amnh], we’ll now show more results from the relevant site:

Prior to today’s change, only two results from www.amnh.org would have appeared for this query. Now, we determine that the user is likely interested in the Museum of Natural History’s website, so seven results from the amnh.org domain appear. Since the user is looking for exhibitions at the museum, it’s far more likely that they’ll find what they’re looking for, faster. The last few results for this query are from other sites, preserving some diversity in the results.

We’re always reassessing our ranking and user interface, making hundreds of changes each year. We expect today’s improvement will help users find deeper results from a single site, while still providing diversity on the results page.

Exploration and the risk of failure

People seem to be in one of two categories:

Those who seek stability, affiliation, work worth doing and the assurance it (whatever it is) will be okay.
Those who explore, need to know that failure is an option and quest to make a dent in the universe.

You can be in either category, the world needs and rewards both. But pick a brand and a job and a posture that matches your category, or you'll fail, and be miserable until you do.

Hint: there is no category of: "does risky exploration, never fails."

Germany’s “Ibo” Evsan takes aim at Zynga with social games platform Up Web Game

If you believe the analysts out there, social gaming is one of the biggest trends on the web right now. Most notably Zynga, the Valley-based Startup that brought us time consuming (and questionable products) such as MafiaWars or Farmville, definitely knows how to play the game – not only in terms of usage but also in terms of revenue, as a recent tear-down suggests.

Now Germany-based entrepreneur and well known speaker Ibrahim Evsan has teamed up with his longtime partner Thomas Bachem to dig into this lucrative and fun field. After founding Sevenload, one of Europe’s most successful video sharing sites, their new endeavor is called Up Web Game and their first product is on its way – Fliplife.

As Evsan (or “Ibo” as he is best known) told me, they were really not sure of what to do after leaving their executive positions at Sevenload. Yet after months of research and in the pursuit of a “happiness and fun and work policy” they ended up settling on the social games space.

Contrary to Zynga or Germany’s Gameforge, they are not building games upon existing platforms such as Facebook, but will have their own proprietary platform and technology. Fliplife is going to be a 2D alteration of Secondlife, whereas it has more annotations to real life experiences, such as building your virtual career. With all of life’s ups and downs you might become the CEO of a virtual company in your Fliplife persona. These characteristics clearly make Fliplife a product that’s suitable for a broader audience, unlike Second Life, which has never really succeeded in attracting the average web consumer.

The company not only consists of some highly capable individuals but has also managed to raise a 7-figure sum of funding in an A round from Germany’s Hightech Gründerfonds and Rapidshare’s VC branch, Rapidtainment.

It will be interesting to see how much traction Fliplife is able to gain without tight Facebook or Twitter Integration (apart from Connect or the Likes). Recent Seedcamp Winner Platogo eventually had to adjust their product to become more Facebook-friendly in order to attract users and find an additional distribution pathway.

Photo Browsing on a Single Page

Sharing large photo albums on Facebook can be frustrating. It's not easy to find the snapshots that really interest you when you have to browse page-by-page.

We decided to make navigating photo albums simpler, easier and more fun. Now, a photo album will automatically display additional photos as you scroll down a single page. You no longer need to click "Next" or try to guess which page number will reveal the best photos.

This new photo browsing experience is one of a series of improvements we're making to browsing, uploading and tagging photos. We've already increased the size of photos. We've also added face detection to make it easier to tag photos on your home page and throughout the site.

Before this latest change, photo albums would display 20 photos per page. Now instead of waiting for pages to load, you're enjoying more photos of your friends and family. You can see as many as 200 right away in an album.

Don't worry—this won't slow down the browser. We populate the page with more photos as you scroll down. That's similar to how News Feed displays more stories as you navigate down the page.

The thumbnails displayed are also larger, so now you can see more before deciding whether to click to a full-sized image.

I remember that someone asked Matt Cutts if Google could restrict search results to homepages. He answered that it's a good suggestion, but adding [-inurl:html -inurl:htm] to your query works pretty well.

Now you can restrict Google results to homepages, but only if you're looking for blogs. Google Blog Search has always highlighted a small number of blogs related to your query and now you can find even more blogs by clicking on the "homepages" filter from Google's sidebar. Google's definitions of blogs is vague and it's likely that any site that offers feeds is included in Google Blog Search's index.

"We've updated Google Blogsearch to make it easier to find blogs that match your query, instead of just finding blog posts. The blogs tool on Google search results filters your results so you see only blog posts. We've added a homepages option that shows a full set of blogs related to your query," informs Jeremy Hylton in a Buzz post. Here are some examples: [tesla car], [google], [android].
